Good morning and welcome to St Barnabas Stoke – if you are visiting today we hope you encounter God’s goodness and love for you as you join us in worshiping Him, please feel free to stick around afterwards for a coffee and a chat.

This year has been a year of slow, but steady growth and consolidation for our youth ministry. Having youth group on a regular basis has made it much easier for maintaining momentum in the youth group. We continue to meet on a Friday night and a Sunday morning, but have started doing a few new things. Every month the youth band lead the worship in the church service which has been very positive for the bonding of our youth group, for the development of their skills as musicians and as leaders on stage, and has also been teaching them how to worship and the different ways they can connect with God. As we move forward as a band, I am hoping to start getting to young people to lead more of the songs with me supporting them, and also being more active within the service, such as Bible reading, prayers, testimonies etc. They are a somewhat shy and quiet group so it will take a little while to get there, but that is our goal.

Also, Sarah Clarke has kindly volunteered to start leading an Intermediates group on Sunday mornings. This is a real answer to my prayers, as I was finding it very difficult to run Bible studies on Sundays which were engaging yet challenging for 11 year olds and 15-17 year olds! So there will be a few times each month that the youth and the Intermediates will split off, the 13-18’s with me and the 10-12’s with Sarah.

This lines up nicely with my efforts for this year to share the load of Friday night youth ministry a bit more, whilst developing the natural leaders within our group. I have been regularly calling upon Lewis and Clay Greenwood and Molly Clarke to run games or devotions during youth group, giving them feedback during or afterwards. Josh Munro (leader) has also been regularly running games and devotions on Friday nights, and Nicky has recently decided that she would like to run some devotions as well. Also, I have arranged for the occasional guest speaker to come along and share some of their life story with the group. Spreading the load like this has been immensely helpful for me, and beneficial for the group.

In Term 4 I plan to have a couple of Friday night’s where the 10 year olds (those who are too young for youth group now, but will be in youth group next year) can come along and experience what youth group is like, as a way of transitioning them and getting them excited for the following year.

Overall, youth group this year has been quite positive and I’m excited to see how it will continue to develop.
