Good morning and welcome to St Barnabas Stoke – if you are visiting today we hope you encounter God’s almighty grace for you and loving presence as you join us in worship. Please feel free to chat with us afterwards over a coffee and meet some of our people.

Over the last two years we have had some key bible passages that we have focused on to help shape the vision of the church. These passages were given by God (we believe) for us as a church for the season and time we find ourselves in. This is not to say that these passages are only for us, but these passages have shaped and guided the direction of our church.

The first two passages were:

Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.   - 1 Corinthians 12:27

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.   - Matthew 6:33

At the start of the year I preached on these two passages as the themes of the year, we used them to lead decisions at vestry, we kept them at the front of what we did throughout the year and we referred back to them. We would keep on asking what it meant to be the body of Christ and to seek first his kingdom?

This year we have a different passage in front of us:

When the priests withdrew from the Holy Place, the cloud filled the temple of the Lord. And the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled his temple.   - 1 Kings 8: 10-11

Again this has been the focus for us this year… for the glory of the Lord filled his temple.

God’s presence here on earth is not in a box but is in his people, through Jesus, through the cross and through the resurrection. What we are really asking is what does it look like to meet with God? We see this as the key to all we do at St Barnabas as our vision and desire is that this is a place to meet God.  Again this shapes all we do; we make decisions about what we do with this in mind.

We are nearly half way through the year. I want to encourage us again to push into this passage , pray and seek what it means for the glory of the Lord filled his temple.

Yours in Christ

Phil
