The Inside Column 31/7

Good morning and a very warm welcome to you.  We invite you to join us after the service for a hot drink and fellowship.

Synod this week —yaaaay! Firstly, in advance – thank you all very much for your help over what will be a busy time. You will see this week in the foyer the list of the jobs people have signed up for helping with Synod. You will see the details of the assigned tasks, what is expected of you and what time and place you are needed. Can I ask that we all be praying for Synod this next week, that it might be a time of great blessing and unity for the church in the top of the south. If you have any questions please give me a call during the week.

At the Special Parish Meeting on Thursday 3 March 2016, you will recall the church passed the following motion:

That the parishioners of St Barnabas Anglican Church agree to the sale of the Vicarage land and buildings to Nelson City Council.

This Motion was a part of a process that vestry were following, to be able to sell the Vicarage and land. The next stage of the process was to go to standing Committee. Standing committee met three weeks ago, and advised us their decision:

After carefully considering the proposal, Standing Committee has decided not to support the present sale. This decision is  primarily due to the land’s potential for future missional use in the parish, recognising the strategic importance of St Barnabas, the very exciting growth the parish has witnessed over the last few years and the hope that this will continue in years to come. Every member of the Committee expressed understanding of the financial pressures currently facing St Barnabas due to maintenance needs, and has asked the Diocesan Finance Team to advise ways in which the diocese might provide some financial help.

– So you might say the motion is dead in the water!

That being the case, we (vestry) will be looking at ways we can meet our ongoing maintenance costs and consider the best future use of the Vicarage.

On Wednesday we are having our seniors community lunch at 11.45am, after the 11.00am service.  I would like to encourage you all to think about this as a mission opportunity right here in Stoke. As with all mission opportunities, this will mean inviting people, you having to give up some of your time, you having to be brave, and it will take some effort. Please take some time to think, pray about who you might be able to invite, and let’s make this community lunch into a great outreach into our community.

Yours in Christ

Phil
