Good morning and a very warm welcome to you.  We invite you to join us after the service for a hot drink and fellowship.

Today you will see some sign-up sheets in the foyer for Synod help. We are hosting Synod from Thursday 4 August through to Saturday 6 August and we need your help.

We have broken the jobs down into different time slots; we will need a team leader for each of the different roles and small group of people to help. If you have any time at all it will be greatly appreciated – even a couple of hours will be helpful. Synod is also big fund raiser for the church so the more we can all do together the greater the funds raised. Don’t for get to sign up today – get in fast before all the good jobs get taken.

In his comments from the Bible in one year Nicky Gumbel quotes Woody Allen who said ‘Eighty percent of life, is just showing up.’  So much of life is simply the set of circumstances we find ourselves in – things sort of happen to us.  For example our parents, our genetic design, the weather, much of our education and our government are all things that we experience as ‘happening to us’.  In Greek grammar, we express these sorts of things in what we call the ‘passive voice’.  However, we also make things happen – when we take a step.  When I initiate an action and do something, I would express that in the ‘active voice’. Most of us can appreciate the difference between passive and active – between the things that happen to us and the things we make happen.

As we have been working our way through the book of Acts, we see the early disciples make things happen they are active in living out there faith, taken every opportunity to tell others about the Jesus.

I find it can be easy to take a much more ‘things sort of happen to me’ approach to telling others about Jesus. At the weekly pray meeting I have been praying that God would be speaking to us to give us boldness and to give us opportunity to speak into someone’s life, that we might be active in our faith.

God involves us in his plans. Of course, he could do it all on his own, but he chooses to involve us.  We do what we can do, what we are called to be active in, and God does only what he can do.

Yours in Christ

Philip
