The Inside Column 20/9

Good morning and a warm welcome to all. If you are visiting with us today, we would love to get to know you. Please feel free to stay for a hot drink after the service.

The annual Diocesan Synod was this week, down at the Buller parish. The Bishop wrote  recently…

“Buller is an amazing part of our diocese – has one of the best climates – which is a tightly kept secret! But it is also a part of the diocese that is reeling under the current economic conditions. The downturn in Solid Energy has led to many people losing their jobs and needing to leave. And next year Holcim Cement is closing down, which probably means the end of the port as it currently exists, and again the loss of jobs.

Combine this with the downturn in the dairy sector, and we see a community which is struggling financially. There are a lot of houses for sale in the town and many young people have found themselves in a very difficult position. They have mortgages to meet on their homes and as jobs are currently not readily available in Westport, they need to look for work elsewhere. Often as they can’t sell their houses, they are having to declare themselves bankrupt. These are difficult times for them,”

As I am writing this before Synod I can’t tell you how Synod went, but it would be good to be praying for the church on the coast as they go through this hard time. Pray for Steve Wockner as he leads his Church and helps be a light in the darkness.

There has been a fair bit of illness around the last couple of weeks, keep those you know that are unwell in your prayers, and do let us know if you need some help. Margret Hackston has a great team of people that will come and bring you soup and come for a visit if needed.

The organ is broken the estimate to repair the organ is $14,000 so we have put out some Organ Repair Donation Envelopes in the foyer. If you would like to make a donation towards the cost of getting the organ back up and running then please do so. The organ repairers will be back in Nelson this week and will take away the parts that need fixing, so the organ will be out of action for about 6-8 weeks.

We are now gearing up for the church fair, on Saturday 17 October – only 4 weeks to go! There will be more information coming out over the next couple of weeks; the sign up book is in the foyer. Please put you name down where you think you might be able to help on the day.

Yours in Christ

Philip
