The Inside Column 19/7

Good morning and a warm welcome to all. If you are visiting with us we would love to get to know you. Please feel free to stay for a hot drink after the service.

Next Sunday evening we will be running the Alpha course. The course will run from 5.30pm with a light dinner to start the evening.

Why are we running this course?
There are things we do as a church that make us a Church, worship, pray, communion, the Word, fellowship, these are thing we do as Christians. The rhythms or practices we have that draw us closer to God, and in the process we are changed in to his likeness. There are other things we do as we out work our faith – like pastoral care, food parcels, home visits, and evangelism.

Yes, there I said it – Evangelism! Part of working out our faith is telling others about God and what he has done in our lives. In other words we share the Good News about Christ. We as a church can be good at a lot of things, but for some reason we are not that keen on evangelism. The Alpha course is one of the easier ways for us to do Evangelism – all we have to do is invite someone we know to come and give it a go.

The first week’s talk is called Christianity – Boring, Irrelevant, Untrue and will give people a taste of what Alpha is all about. There is no heavy sell; no one will get hit on the head with a bible.

We are partnering with Holy Trinity Richmond with this Alpha course and I would love it if you would think about who you can bring. Maybe come along yourself… This is an opportunity for us to bring someone, to be praying for them, and to see what God will do in their lives.

In Mathew we read about some of Jesus’ last words to his disciples. These same words still apply to us today:

Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’
- Matthew 28: 18-20

Are we going to take these words and put them into action?

Yours in Christ
Philip
