The Inside Column 14/6

Good morning and a warm welcome to all. If you are visiting with us we would love to get to know you. Please feel free to stay for a hot drink after the service.

This week I would like to draw your attention to home groups and the important role they have in our church family. Home groups are about relationship and mission. They help us to grow as a community of faith. As we share in home groups we connect with each other, God and the world around us. These three aspects of relationship are central to our mission, resulting from the good news of Jesus’ love for us.

We use the phrase ‘Loving God, his people and his world’ to describe our purpose here at St Barnabas church. This is also our focus for each of our home groups. Home groups are a core part of loving one another and they are also a core part of our mission to the world around us. Are you part of one? If not, I invite you to join a home group. We have a number of different groups that meet at varying times at locations within Stoke, Richmond and Nelson. Some of our groups have particular focus such as the mother’s group and the men’s home group.

Over the next few months I am going to take a couple of moments during services to share some information about our current home group leaders and the general focus of each home group. If you are not part of a home group and are interested in joining one, please come and talk to me and we will try and find a group that suits you.

In John 13:35 Jesus says to his disciples: ‘By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another’ (as I have loved you –v34). There is deep connection made in scripture between loving relationship and the mission of God in the world. We are called to share our faith with each other.

When we meet together in groups which help us grow our relationship with God, we get drawn into to loving each other as he loves us, simultaneously, we reach out beyond ourselves sharing the news of this love we have received with those people in the world around us who do not know this love, or experience it. God’s love turns us toward mission.

God does not seem to separate mission and relationship, so we don’t want to either. That is why home groups are such a core part of developing relationships and mission as a community of faith.

Yours in Christ

Jonathan
