The Inside Column 17/3

Good Morning and a very warm welcome to all. If you are visiting with us today we pray you will feel at home here at St Barnabas. Please make yourself known and feel welcome to stay for tea or coffee after the service.

One of the things I have been thinking about lately is Intimacy with God. How do we as a church and individuals find, live and have, intimacy with God? The question is, do we give enough of our time to get to know God intimately? If we are to take intimacy with God at all seriously, the first place to start is regularly reading God’s Word – The Bible. Surveys reveal that 80% of Churchgoers don’t read the Bible daily!

“It’s a big book full of big stories with big characters. They have big ideas (not least about themselves) and make big mistakes. It’s about God, and greed, and grace; about life, lust, laughter and loneliness. It’s about birth, beginnings and betrayal; about siblings, squabbles and sex; about power and prayer and prison and passion. And that,” says Tom Wright, “is only Genesis; the first of sixty-six books in the Bible written by different authors, in different styles, covering thousands of years, and yet telling one great single story– a story that is true and real, and which gives meaning to all people and all communities, to your life and to my life, in fact, to universal history. It’s a story that begins with God’s creation and an account of rebellion, continues with the history of one nation and significantly one man, and moves on through the Church to the coming of God’s kingdom. It’s a story like no other, and has a way of shaping our lives like on other book.”

There are many daily bible reading plans and one of the best I have found is Nicky Gumbel’s Bible in One Year online at www.htb.org.uk. For those without computers The Word for Today has a daily reflection and a Bible reading plan. Phone Radio Rhema toll free on 0508 000 717 for your free copy. Most Bibles have a reading plan in them and of course there are many good Bible Study guides available from Manna books.

The challenge – for each of us to make Intimacy with God and reading the Bible daily a goal this year, and discover what God has to say to each of us this year.

Have a great week
Philip
