The Inside Column 1/7

Good morning and a very warm welcome to all this morning.

Well I got through Synod, well most of it. There were several National issues that we talked about, the ordination of people living in same sex relationships, the definition of marriage as not only between a man and a woman, but also same sex couples wishing to have the title, environmental issues around mining, the ongoing funding of St John’s and how the asset is used. So the Anglican Church nationally has some big issues in front of it.

At times I found myself asking “What can I do?” with these big national issues. I think the answer is “Pray and then pray some more!” The people going to the General Synod will need our prayers as we (the Nelson Diocese) make a stand on some of these big things that will have a big impact on the unity of the Anglican Church.

Looking a bit closer to home…. Last week we were very thankful for a large donation to the church and a real answer to prayer. Here is some further information about our current financial position.

We currently owe the Diocese $38,000. This is of course, a large sum of money, and to understand how we have come to be in this position we need to break it down a bit.

You will remember that we ended last year with a deficit of $14,000 which we have carried over into this year, and  to date this year we are running a deficit of $24,000. At least $10,000 of this was due to some costs that we were told would not impact on our balance sheet and after talking with the Diocesan office we are assured that we will be able to sort this out in the coming months.

So if we put that $10,000 aside we are left with a short fall of $14,000. The $10,000 donation reduced our debt to $4000 and  a couple of other donations have helped bring it down further, meaning we are very close to being back in a break even position.

The finance team have been working hard to bring costs under control and with income showing an improvement we believe that should be able to achieve our current budget, and may be in a position to pay off some of last year’s deficit.

There will be a more in-depth break down of the finances in two weeks, on Sunday 15 July.

Thank you all for your support, but above all we are thankful for the provision of our Father and his answer to prayer. Hallelujah.

Yours in Christ

Philip
