The annual St Barnabas Church Stoke ‘Foyer@4’ Concert Series kicked off on 23 October with Nelson’s La Vida String Quartet, followed by Miles Jackson on 30 October performing and launching his new CD ‘The music of Spain and South America’.

This week sees two concerts at St Barnabas. This Friday at 7.30pm features a café concert ‘Hedges and Ditches’ – early and traditional music for voice, lute, violin and accordion. Performers are Sophia Bidwell (accordion) ,Lois Johnston (soprano), Kat Lambarth (violin), Jonathan Le Cocq (lute & guitar). Described as ‘late Renaissance music for lute and voice, and Celtic airs and dances ancient and modern’ the music will appeal to both traditional and contemporary acoustic music lovers.

Christchurch musicians, Dr Roger Buckton and Kim Rockell will be performing Brazilian ballads, jazz standards and classics at 4.00pm this Sunday 13 November. With composers from Jobim to Poulenc and Reinhardt to Takacs they have put together an interesting and varied programme. Both Roger (flutes) and Kim, (guitars) perform regularly overseas in their own right but have joined to form ‘Black Orpheus’ to weave a tapestry of sound and colour as one. Kim’s vocals in Portuguese in some numbers add a different perspective and something quite unique and special. This is the final concert of a the Black Orpheus concert tour of Greymouth, Westport, Murchison and Stoke.

Further concerts are being planned, with the final concert of the series on Sunday 11 December, featuring Schola Cantorum Choir, a Canterbury University Choir led by Dr Roger Buckton.

All concerts are at St Barnabas, 523 Main Road Stoke. Door sales only $10.
